As many of you know, Photoshop Actions are the best way to ease the pain of the multi-step tasks you have to do again and again in Photoshop. The most useful one (arguably) in my arsenal is the Flatten/Select All/Copy/Undo Action I’ve created. F-SACU, as I like to call it is easy to create, and will save you tons of time when dealing with the realities of PSDs that have scores (or even hundreds) of layers.

What it does:

  • Flattens all the layers you have going in your crazy-huge PSD (the new flat image only shows the layers you had visible).
  • Selects the entire canvas.
  • Copies the canvas to the clipboard.
  • Undoes the flattening so that your work is back to normal.

Enjoy the poll. Arguments for each side are presented below… in haiku as always.

WEEK 2

There are only two kinds of people in this world… people who watch movies over and over again and people who pretty much only watch movies once… which are you?

“Again and again” argument haiku:
This movie, so great.
Subtle details, much nuance,
Repeat viewings? Yes.

“One and done” argument haiku:
Film, I did enjoy.
New pictures now can be viewed.
Why waste time with same.

Today while out running errands, I was starving and stopped by my local Chipotle to grab a tasty burrito. Being alone, and hating to be idle while eating in public (yes, I know I have problems)… I brought in my neighborhood newspaper. With my trusty burrito in hand, I perused the paper and stumbled across another of my “problems”… sudoku. Love that crap. Here’s where the dilemma began. I had no writing utensil… and no patience to wait until eating then getting back to the office to do the sudoku (plus once back in the office, I have work to do… can’t waste time doing puzzles). So I looked around to make sure no one was paying attention to me, and pulled a MacGyver.

The formula for what transpired:
me-pencil+toothpick+tabascoSauce-anyPrideWhatsoever
=

The proof:

Adobe CS3 comes out tomorrow… Continion will be buying it and I’ll be test driving it soon… so hang loose and I’ll give a review and some Tips and or tutorials really soon.

Until then, here’s a novice level mini-tip (more of a semi-stern parental reminder) for CS2 (and CS1 (and probably CS3)):
When creating new layers, we all know we should name the layer right away and avoid hanging out with “Willa Ventually”. She’s nice at first, but she tends to multiply… quickly. Things get out of hand real fast, and by the time you realize it, it’s a huge pain to go and rename the layers later. Those who share PSDs with others absolutely have to name layers, the dent to production efficiency can’t be overstated. So here’s the easy fix (and a great habit we should all form):

Create all new layers by any of the following:

- Hit [shift]+[cmd]+”n”

- From the good ol’ Menu Bar choose: Layer>New>Layer

- Hold [opt] while clicking the “new layer” icon

Each of these options will bring up a special layer properties dialog with the “Name” input box already highlighted and ready for you to type (no clicking into the dialog box necessary).

Fast, easy, and super-important.

No foolin’.

Tom

Arguments for each side are presented below… for no particular reason, in haiku.

WEEK 1

There are only two kinds of people in this world… people who prefer toilet paper to come over the top and people who prefer it to come from underneath… which are you?

“Over the top” argument haiku:
Quicker pull option.
Why reach under for paper,
then “under” again?

“Underneath” argument haiku:
Less ugly dangle.
Flap stays neat against the wall.
More feng shui rest room.

How this’ll work:

Every week I’ll post a crazy/weird/stupid foto and add a caption. If anyone actually reads the post, they are more than welcome to post alternative captions. The funniest one will be posted with the foto again the following week. The judging will be completely biased and unfair and done by the esteemed Thomas J. Fulery and his equally esteemed colleague, Marcus Everton (my best friend).

How does a fool begin? Like that I guess. Now that that’s over with… Hello. Welcome. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.

I’m Thomas J. Fulery… more affectionately known as Tom Fulery. Yes I know that it’s unbelievable that someone could be named that… but believe me, like most of you, my parents, not me, chose my name. I’ve grown to like it over the years, so I’m quite cool with it. I went to high school with an Anthony Hopkins, an Andy Garcia, a Charles Brown and an Amy Fisher (remember that name?). Serious… so I’m in good company when it comes to being asked, “Is that REALLY your name?” Anyways enough about that, if you want to know more about me, check out my profileNew Page. What this blog’s about it just what the title suggests. Mostly ramblings that mean very little (or less) to anyone, but I’ll have a few regular features, notably the Foolish Foto of the Week and segment I like to call “Two Kinds”… check ‘em out and check back weekly for the updates.

Wish me luck.

Foolishly,

Tom
